WHAT IS the SOCIETY of DECORATIVE PAINTERS? The SDP is made up of a rare collection of some 14,000 members spread all across the United States and Canada as well as England, Germany, Mexico, Japan and Saudi Arabia. Anyone can join the Society. Members range from beginning painters and decorative artists to manufacturers and distributors of paint supplies and decorative wares. Men and women, young and old alike, have found an exciting and educational life in the creative world of tole and decorative art. The National Society was organized October 22, 1972, with 22 members. The National Society boasts a phenomenal growth rate and rare enthusiasm among its members. The Annual Convention highlights brings together the best painters, artists, and suppliers from all across the country. It is a week long extravaganza of seminars, displays and special classes, with an exceptional trade show. Only members of the Society may take part in the variety of classes offered. This is the time that more classes in decorative art are taught by more teachers and attended by more students than in any one place anywhere in the world. The DECORATIVE PAINTER is the official publication of the Society. Every other month (4 times annually), the DECORATIVE PAINTER is mailed to all members of the Society. Included in the magazine is a variety of topical sections; news of the Society and its members; and special lessons and instructions. The creative ability and recognized achievements of those who contribute made this an outstanding publication. Full color reproductions of finished pieces help the artist and painter refine their skills. Advertisers in the magazine offer the latest products and publications found only through the Society magazine. The DECORATIVE PAINTER is not sold as a subscription, but is only obtained through membership in the Society. The SDP has more than 300 Chapters. These Chapters offer opportunities for the beginning or the master artist to grow and learn the art of tole and decorative painting. Those who belong to SDP Chapters benefit from the supportive leadership of the Chapter and of the entire Society. This brings opportunities for education fellowship, exchange of ideas, stimulation, appreciation, sharing and recognition. The SDP is the only association in the country which provides a certification program in the field of tole and decorative painting. The Society offers two levels of accreditation: Certified Decorative Artist and Master Decorative Artist. The program offers members of the Society an opportunity to display the artistic achievement of its members and creates a climate for the improvement of skills and knowledge of the decorative artist. Certification of members recognizes the outstanding talents of the tole and decorative artist and offers these individuals the credentials they need to teach and publish those acquired talents.
